What is a lap band?

A lap band is a weight-loss method involving an inflatable silicone band placed around the upper portion of your stomach. This band creates a small pouch, which limits food intake and helps reduce the amount of food you eat.

While the lap band can work effectively for some, it may not deliver the results you are looking for. This procedure is reversible, and Dr. Sanni offers the surgical removal of the lap band.

Why should I consider lap band removal surgery?

You might consider lap-band removal if you are unsatisfied with your progress and Dr. Sanni agrees that a different approach may be more beneficial.

You may also need lap-band removal if you experience complications like persistent nausea, vomiting, or ongoing discomfort. Severe acid reflux can also indicate a need for the band’s removal. After Dr. Sanni removes the lap band, many patients feel immediate relief from these symptoms.

In some instances, the lap band may shift out of position or begin integrating into the stomach. To avoid additional health concerns and potential long-term complications, Dr. Sanni might recommend removing the lap band.

What can I expect during lap band removal surgery?

Dr. Sanni performs minimally invasive lap-band removal surgeries using laparoscopic techniques that require only small incisions. If you had prior surgery to place the band, Dr. Sanni may even be able to use the same incisions.

Through these small incisions, Dr. Sanni carefully cuts away the scar tissue around the band before removing it. At this time, any damage to the stomach or surrounding tissue caused by the band can be repaired. Excess scar tissue is also removed to prevent potential future blockages.

If you plan to pursue another bariatric procedure for continued weight loss, Dr. Sanni can perform a lap-band removal in conjunction with a sleeve gastrectomy.

With minimally invasive surgery, recovery is typically faster and has fewer risks. Dr. Sanni will review what to expect after surgery during your initial consultation.
